Any suggestions for this green-horn?

Post by JJ2013 »

Hi y'all!

Currently I have the 8Band EQ and EQ Plus by W2IHY and may play with that set-up for a while, but in the interest of further experimentation I am thinking along the lines below as a next step. I realize everyone's station (not forgetting one's voice), RF environment etc. are different, but I wonder if you could comment on the set-up below?

Heil PR-40
Behringer 2200 pre-amp
Behringer 1124DSP (EQ and Feedback Destroyer)
Compressor limiter (suggestions?)
IPLUS
TS-870S

The 2200 is only needed in going in at the ACC port on the back of the TS-870S right? If I don't do that I would probably only need to buy the Behringer 1124DSP and Compressor limiter right?

Could someone tell me why it SOOOO much better for me to feed the audio from my mic through the back via the pre-amp? If I don't do this, I assume that I could still EQ the TX transmit bandwidth to 3.5 ... 4.5kHz?

Howdy JJ,

Sounds like you got a good start on a sweet Rack there with a few changes...

We don't know a whole lot about the W2IHY equipment other then the I-Box. Not sure if the EQPlus can take a full Line Level Audio Input and then drop it to a Mic Level Input so you might want to research this. You might be better off using the I-Box for this.

A simple Behringer Compressor is inexpensive and will work just fine to get your feet wet.

The Mic pre is needed to bring the Microphone Level Audio up to Line Level Audio so the rest of the Pro Audio equipment has enough drive level to work with. Going back into the Front Mic Jack of the rig requires you to drop this Line Level Audio back to Mic Level Audio because of the Mic amplifier in the rig. If you do not do this you will overdrive the piss out of the TS-870 with no way to control it.
Could someone tell me why it SOOOO much better for me to feed the audio from my mic through the back via the pre-amp? If I don't do this, I assume that I could still EQ the TX transmit bandwidth to 3.5 ... 4.5kHz?
The problem with going in the Front Mic jack on a TS-870 when using an EQ, is the added low frequencies and especially the upper frequency "splat" that occurs from the internal mic amplifier in the 870. When you go into the rear ACC Jack of the 870 (after the C131 mod), the transmitted signal is allot cleaner due to the bypassing of the internal mic pre. Removed is the high frequency "splat" from pushing the DSP upper band limits and the low frequencies are allot "truer".

In short, when you use an EQ to get wider bandwidth with the TS-870, you need to input the audio into the ACC2 input.

Suggestions for this green-horn

Howdy Voodoo Guru :)

Julius told me that "There is no need for connecting an iBox on the output of the EQPlus. The output of the EQPlus is a circuit similar to what is in the iBox."

He also said that I could connect "Behringer gear into the EQPlus Aux input. If I connect gear other than the 8Band EQ, I may or may not have to provide ground loop isolation with an iBox. Until I try it I will not know."

The EQPlus has many functions incorporated in it (additional bass+treble EQ/limiter/compressor/downward expander/effects/ and the output level pot can be used to generate an audio level between 10mV and 1V peak-to-peak. This should be plenty when going through ACC2 (will do the C131 mod) in back of the TS870S.
Q1: Incidentally, is adding 1uF of capacitance alright? What if I put in a 4.7uF cap instead of the 1uF? I understand that you can't add too much capacitance as the roll-off point would become "too low" resulting in inhibition of other functionality. I will leave the existing cap in place and just add the extra cap in parallel (actually, a really competent technician will do this for me I think).
Q2: I assume that the MONITOR function of the TS-870S will still work if I go in through ACC2?
Q3: I assume that even with cap mod done, I could still use a mic by plugging it through front mic jack as well for comparison purposes right? Except that I would not need the mic pre-amp......

With all of the above in mind and just to get my feet wet, my audio chain would be something like this:

*PR-40
*Behringer Ultragain Pro MIC2200
*Behringer Destroyer Pro DSP1124P
*iBox (may or may not be needed)
*EQ Plus (connected via ACC2 in rear after C131 cap mod)

What say?

Much obliged!

JJ

Howdy JJ,

Very good, Now we know that it will do what an I-Box does.
Q1: Incidentally, is adding 1uF of capacitance alright? What if I put in a 4.7uF cap instead of the 1uF? I understand that you can't add too much capacitance as the roll-off point would become "too low" resulting in inhibition of other functionality. It is best not to use an electrolytic capacitor for an audio coupling cap. We like to use a 1uf ZR7 Ceramic cap (size 805) as it does not have any polarity, and it is the correct size to fit on the pads without making it look like a Kludge by trying to fit a big electrolytic in there underneath the board.

But to answer your question, no a 4.7uf is not to big. The bigger you go the lower the frequency roll off will be. If you go too big, then you will be getting lower and lower closer to DC. You really don't want all that noise, hum, and popping coming in with your audio. The 1uf cap will start rolling off the low frequencies around 30cps in that circuit.

It is best to remove the original cap and don't "strap" it with another one. That is unprofessional and looks horrid.
Q2: I assume that the MONITOR function of the TS-870S will still work if I go in through ACC2?
Yes, it will.
Q3: I assume that even with cap mod done, I could still use a mic by plugging it through front mic jack as well for comparison purposes right? Except that I would not need the mic pre-amp......
Yes you can still use the Front Mic Jack Normally. But be aware that in order to key the Front Mic Jack you need to use the Front Mic Jack Key circuit or the Remote Jack on the Rear.
In order to key the ACC2 Audio Input, you will need to key the ACC2 Pins.
