Trials and Tribulations

Post by Desmoface »

Hey gang, just wanted to report in on me progress in the magical world of voodoo audio..

The current setup is
Heil PR20
Mic-2200
DSP-1124
EX3200

So I took the plunge and got me a bloody rp533...tried it after the eq..my thinking being that it would do double duty as a compressor/limiter and voodoo magic machine..well, I was getting some serious tearing, which was weird because I thought that was what the compressor/limiter would control..Maybe a de esser is what I need?

So, after reading the posts on this board, I found one from Voodoo Guru advising, I think it was OZ, to put it right after the pre-amp...So, I ripped out my MIC2200 and stuck the rp533 in it's place, first in the chain (figured I didn't need two pre-amps inline) and YEEHAWW!!

All is multi-bueno in me shack..Now, I have a bunch of knob-twisting/button pushing to do to get it all sounding better..but I'm on me way..

Funny thing is that I have to turn the gain controls on the 533 way down to get proper levels in the rest of the audio gear..I mean, it's not even registering on the rp533 meter its so low..but the rest of the gear is happy..

Just wanted to say that this forum has some great info and it sure helped my newbie ass out..Ciao for now..

That is terriffic!!

Welcome to the upper ranks of Voodooism Steave.
That earns you a new Rank on the Voodoo Forum!!

You're gunna love what that machine does for you. its a little finicky and takes some getting used to, but well worth it!

As far as the Gain Issue...
Hmmm...thats strange.
We know the 1124 will get BAD digital distortion if it is driven with more than -3db on peaks.
We'd set the 533 for an output of -3db on voice peaks, then look at what your input meter is telling you on the 1124.
You'll have to look in the manual to see which configuration and buttons to push on the 1124 to view the input level.
If it is too excessive in extreme, check the input level pushbutton on the rear of the 1124.
Then adjust the "output level" control on the 533 to wear the input meter on the 1124 is showing a -3db on peaks.
There is unfortunately no output control on the 1124 to adjust the input of the EX3200.
Try that and see what happens!

Hi Mike, thanks for the reply. If I switch the comp out I get good deflection on the meter, so It must have something to do with the compressor settings I'm using on the rp533..

Duke, NA1A gave me some settings to get me started: Threshold is at about 9 o'clock, ratio is at around 10 o'clock, attack is all the way counter-clockwise, release is at about 2 o'clock, bottom at 12'o'clock, definition at about 2 o'clock.

Oh well, it appears that my 870 is only going out to about 3.2k, according to w2ihy and his new flex radio...that bears itself out in the audio reports I'm getting..they all say "it's full bodied but lacking a little in the highs."

My audio quest continues..I was hoping the 870 would be the radio..lookin like I'm going to have to track down an 8fity/dsp-100. Thanks again for all the advice..73's
