DSP-100 troubles

Post by W4RAW »

Hey y'all,

I've got a TS-850/DSP-100 combo that has been sitting here collecting dust. The DSP-100 is NFG. Kenwood East took thier shot at fixing it and diagnosed the problem as a rs232 signal issue. They returned it as 'unfixable' after replacing 'All the usual chips that might cause the problem'. They did not seem to want anything to do with actually tracing the problem. Anyway... I got in there and found that the voltage on TP5 (in the PLL section) was more than 1.5v less than what the service manual calls for it to be. Adjusting the trimmer (TC1) gets me a high of 2 volts, while the SM calls for 3.6 +- 0.1v. I'm still studying the schematic and tracing backwards to try and find the reason for the voltage drop in this section.

I have two questions:

1. Does anyone know of someone OTHER than 'wood East that might have a chance of actually fixing this puppy?

2. Anyone have any troubleshooting tips for the PLL section?

Thanks y'all!
Scott

ouch....

Yea, when it comes to that particular unit, We've found your basically on your own.
If Kenwood East said it was unfixable, this doesn't necessarily mean its so.
In there eyes 'unfixable' means that it would take too much of there time to diagnose and fix the problem then the unit would be worth, or for what you would be willing to pay them to do it.
We've gotten several rigs that were deemed 'Unfixable' and after many many hours were able to bring them from the brinks of Radio Hell.
There is almost no information on the internal workings of the DSP-100.
Most all of the Engineers that had designed that unit are no longer at Kenwood.
So you are basically "on your own".
Hopefully they gave you a list of the checks and components they changed while performing there diagnostics....yea we know....yea right!!
Well Good Luck with that, and we would definitely like to know the outcome!
Take Care,

Yeah... that's what I was thinking ;) Alone again...

I'll just make it a project and teach myself as I go. I just picked up a known working unit from a guy I know. He takes good care of his gear. I'll just compare and learn.

I've had this 850 for awhile and would love to get it back on the air. But without the DSP-100, it just doesn't cut it.

Take care! 8)

FOUND IT!

Man... my head is about 15 sizes too big at the moment. I was tracing the pll section and by chance noticed a solder bridge. Cleared it and the voltage came up to spec, and it fired right up. I'm on the air with it right now on 3.848.

Gotta love it.

Nope, no mods yet. I'll get to that now that it's back from the dead...

After looking at the area around the solder bridge, it looks like someone was in there ('wood east?) and brushed a hot iron across the board. It pulled a VERY thin bridge over two nearby pads. I'm guessing that what ever kenwood service replaced must have fixed the original problem, but in the process a hot iron got away from them and sheeeeeeeit! New problem in the same ciruit!

I'm just happy to have it back up and runnin'

Mods

Post by Voodoo Guru »

Even the Best of the Elite have bad days!
Thats for sure.
Too bad it was at your expense.

When you go to do the mods to your TS-850s/DSP-100,
we have some additional ones for the monitor circuit.
Just let us know and We can email them to you complete with pictures.
There are 3ea caps in the monitor that were not addressed in the original mods website.
We've identified these and changed them on ours.
It fixes the High Frequency attenuation that the Monitor circuit has on the TS-850s.
Sent them to John, NU9N who is supposed to add them to the TS-850s Mod website.
We're also going to add them here to the Modification Maddness page when we have time.

We started to use the TS-850s/DSP-100 again, now we have a problem with it.
It seems to be heat related...
When the unit first turns on all is ok in the Mic Gain department of the DSP-100.
As it warms up over the course of about an hour, the Mic Gain seems to drop....you have to increase the control quite abit.
Looks like we're going to have to get in there with the COLD spray and see whats up.
More then likely it is the first Op Amp....We wanted to change it anyway...so I guess you could call it fortunate?!
