Howdy kb2whb,
In our experience, regardless of whether the Balanced Cable uses a TRS or XLR connector on the ends, if it is wired as Balanced then they are effectively the same.
As a preference, we like the XLR connectors, but they both work very well.
Some rack units have so many Input and Outputs that the only way to make them all fit in a 1U Rack package is to use Balanced TRS connectors. This necessitates having some patch cables with TRS connectors on one end and XLR on the other for interconnecting to these pieces.
Now they have Dual purpose jacks in some newer units which accept both XLR or TRS in the same jack.
We would say that about 90% of most of the audio rack gear out there uses XLR Connectors.
Take Care,
