Why is The dsp 2024p mixed in with the mixer instead of in line after 3-sum in Studio X's set up

Howdy Dave457,

That is called "side chaining" and why do it?

Here at Studio "X" everything is completely Analog, nothing goes thru any Digi-Wigi.
In other words, nothing in the Main Mix is converted to Digital using Digital to Analog (DAC) or Analog to Digital (ADC) converters.

If we were to run our Main Mix straight thru the DSP2024p, then we could not say this as the entire Mix would be digitized inside the unit, the effect added, then converted back to Analog. To prevent this, we decided to "side chain" the effect.

By doing this, audio is split from the Main Mix using the mixer and sent to the DSP2024P. The output of the 2024P is then sent back to the mixer to be added back into the Main Mix.

To our ears, there is a noticeable difference in clarity and the overall cleanliness of the effect by doing this.

One of our long term goals is to build an analog Plating unit, this is actually a 4' X 8' thin sheet of metal with transducers attached to it suspended in an enclosure. Of course this is quite large and needs absolute silence around it to work, but we think it will be well worth the effort.

An example of the use of one of these Analog Plating devices (Ecoplate) is in Michael Jackson's song Thriller when Vincent Price laughs.

Thanks for the reply, just trying to understand your audio chain.
Everything you say makes sence, I'll proly give it a try as well.

That will be to cool to hear the ecoplate once you get it going, that would take the place of the 20204p right?

Howdy Dave 457,

That is correct, it would completely replace it.
Of course you would only have one effect, Plating, but that is all we use here anyway.

On your rack page setup you state that on the dsp2024 - you have your ch.1 feeding into ch.2, is there any other settings that have to change when this is done or just ch.1 feeding ch.2 with the settings posted?

Yea pretty much. The only thing is that you have to turn the MIX way down.

We no longer run it that way now, its just a single channel now. It sounds cleaner running it side chained.
