Rack order and sibilance or tearing question

Post by KiloD9 »

Hi, new here to the forum and to essb

Rack order is:
RE-27
MIC2200
DEQ2496
EX3200
DSP2024
I-box
TS950SDX

I am coming out of ch 1 of the ex 3200 to ch 2 with an unbalanced cord then back into the deq2496 ch 2 for DEQ and compression then to the dsp2024 (ch1 of deq2496 is PEQ and expander)
Rack order is ok??

I'm having what I think is a small sibilance problem, with the tx monitor volume up high I can hear it when C's and S's are used, I did search here on the forum for some answers and did find some on the sibilance problem, but have also seen the term "tearing", question what does tearing sound like....is it constant or like sibilance only certian letters??

any help for this newbie is much appreciated.
Thanks
Larry

Howdy Larry,
Welcome to the Forum!!

It sounds like you did your research as the rack order is just fine.

"Tearing" is just another term for sibilance. Whenever you are talking and say something with a "sh" in it then it sounds like a spitting/ripping sound instead of a smooth "shhhh".

It sounds allot like RFI so it is sometimes difficult to determine if it is actually an audio equipment setting or RFI is actually getting into your audio. Does it do this on all Bands?

Plug your headphones into the last rack piece (DSP2024) and see if you hear the tearing with both the Transmitter keyed and unkeyed. If you don't hear the tearing with the TX unkeyed, then more then likely it is an RFI problem.

If you do hear the tearing all the time, then it is just a matter of getting the compression and EQ settings correct to stop the sibilance problem.

Hope you find it.

Thanks for the help,

I should of stated in my previous post that I was hearing it all the time, so I have now readjusted the compression and it is gone :D

I also did plug the headphones into the DSP2024 to take a listen and it sounds good now, no RFI problem either.

Being new to this I'm still learning the equipment and taking small steps....so now it's on to the EQ I have seen your post on starting setup 90,160,320 and so on and have downloaded spectraPlus SC to help see what I'm doing.....so the learning continues.

Thanks again....and thanks to the SEARCH button!

Aphex 622

Post by KiloD9 »

I see that the DEQ2496 process goes in the order that I see on the screen,GEQ,PEQ,DEQ,DYN,Limit, so in my current order I was using the PEQ then the expander/gate on ch 1, I have now added the aphex 622 so that I can use the gate before the EQ as I have to much noise in the shack(something I'm working on to reduce the noise) so now I have a question on using the 2496, I was using PEQ and DYN expander/gate on ch 1 then to ch 2 for DEQ and DYN compressor, so now the new order would just be PEQ,DEQ,DYN compressor on ch 1???

Thanks
Larry
