TS-870

Post by 2E0IMT »

Hi all

My first post as a new member, so be gentle with me

The current equipment is: Kenwood TS-870, Behringer B-1, W2IHY 8 band & noise gate, W2IHY EQplus, getting quite a few unsolicited good audio reports so I guess that the externals are doing their job, a good friend is about to do the modification to feed my audio into the rear of the 870 (SMD`s and me don`t mix  ), so I would like to ask the following:

A) Is there a noticeable difference in audio quality between a "rear fed" 870 and a "front fed" 870 ? and if so what is the difference ?.

B) I see that on the modification page it says that the equalised audio will need to be altered once the mod has been performed, any advice on the new settings please ?.

Cheers

Ian 2E0IMT

Howdy Ian,
Welcome to the Forum!!

You have a great Rig there to make some beautiful audio for sure.
Feeding the Audio into the ACC2 connector in the rear of the TS870 will make a big difference in the Audio quality.
Especially after the C131 Mod.

There are a few differences you will notice immediately.

1 - The Highs will be allot cleaner.
The High Frequencies will loose the 'grunge' and 'roughness' that comes from trying to boost them into the 870 for more bandwidth.

2 - The Lows will be allot smoother.
Since you are bypassing the first Op-Amp in the 870 mic circuitry by feeding into the rear of the rig, you will notice allot of the Bassyness and Boomyness from the low frequencies missing.
This is a real good thing!

3 - You will need to feed the Audio into the rig at Line Level.
Since you are not going thru the Mic Amplifier circuitry any longer, you will need to make sure the Audio Level is up to Line Level specs instead of Mic Level.

As far as the New Settings...

We're not that familiar with the W2IHY stuff so your kind of on your own there.
The best we can tell you there is that the EQ will be completely different then what your used to from going into the front.
Especially the Lows.

Good Luck and let us know how you like the difference!!

HELLO TO ALL.

I bought TS-870S with S/N over 40-MILLION, it's about 1 months a go,
I have other TRANSCEIVERS TS2000, & FT1000MP MARK V Field,

But TS-870S is the best, in rx and TX, very good.

But i don't understand one thing,
In my TS-870S when i TUNING CW TONE IT'S OK 100-WATTS TO DOWN 0-WATTS,
BUT IN SSB MODE MINIMAL POWER IS 50-WATTS, i don't know what is the problem,
Please anybody can say somthing?
Anybody knows HIDDEN menu FACTORY -Settings? or HIDDEN mennu all reset to factory settings?

KIND REGARDS,
