Hi Y'all:

Just found this forum while looking for info on my IC-718.

Yepper; I'm a new Ham and I have more than a few questions.

Don't have my GAP Titan up yet; as I can't put up a dipole. I do have an IMAX 2000 up for 10-11-12m tho w/50 ft of Belden 9913 Flex coax.

I run a Diamond 45 amp supply, IC-718, ART Tube MP 'Project Series' preamp, Heil cable, footswitch, and a MXL V88 large capsule condenser mic.

Am considering a Rolls DB25 direct box.

Lots to read here, appreciate the membership

THANX!

I am having a problem with a clicking sound when transmitting. Others have told me about it, so I went in my mobile to hear it for myself. Seems to happen at voice peaks. Audio is otherwise much better than the stock mic or even a Electro-Voice N/D 757 dynamic mic. Only happens when I run the preamp and the Heil cable. That clicking noise happens with either the EV dynamic mic or the MXL condenser mic.

Can't seem to keep the ALC under control at all - is this the problem? Frustrated...

Howdy SawzAll,
It sounds like your overloading the Mic Preamp in the Transmitter on your voice peaks. If you are trying to input Line Level Audio from your rack equipment directly into your Front Microphone Jack on the rig, then that is exactly what is happening.
You need to bring the Line Level Rack Audio down to Mic Level Audio to input it into the Microphone jack. The attenuator controls on the rack equipment just can't do it well enough and you do not have enough control. Check out John's site at http://www.nu9n.com/tx.html
Scroll down and you will see how to connect your rack to your transmitter. He gives various solutions to the problem.
Take care,

Some news here:

Just bought a FlexRadio SDR-1000 w/crystal oven, an Edirol 66 sound card, Samsom C-Valve preamp, AudioTechnica 2010 mic, all cables, manual, and software - in a pkg deal.

Just got a new Behringer UltraGain Pro 2200 mic preamp yesterday.

Dug around my audio equipment and found a Sabine FBX-901 digital feedback suppressor w/balanced in/out.

Got a line on a DBX 166 single-channel compressor that needs some minor repairs.

Since the SDR-1000 has a balanced line in, I don't believe I will need a W2IHY iBox.

I want to use the MXL V88 condenser mic with this setup, as I really like the mic.

How would any of you set it all up - chain wise?

Howdy Sawzall,

Sounds like you got a great deal!
From what you have listed, your missing one of the most important pieces, the Parametric EQ. Without that you will be very limited in the control of your audio. Upon some quick research, the Sabine FBX-901 does not give you any user control on setting up the filters manually like the DSP1124P does.

You are correct on the not needing the I-Box for the input, just as long as you have something to control the audio input.

Take Care,

Some recent developments...

Received the SDR-1000 and accoutrements; then abruptly sent it back.

It was in poor state of repair, and I didn't want to deal with too many minor issues.

So, in the mean time, I purchased a Kenwood TS-2000 less than a year old in pristine condition - still has the warranty card - less than a year old.

So I am going to use that radio instead - and:

*MXL V88 condenser mic
*Behringer UltraGain Pro 2200
*?
*?

What would you use to fill in the blanks?
A Behringer DEQ, and a Ibox?
No/Yes?
I don't see the need for a mixer - since all of that gear is being placed in series.
Should I use one channel of the DEQ for equalization, and the other for compression?
Thoughts?

Should I use the rear access for the audio input?
I want to do it that way - but if I must run it thru the mic input to use the Kenwood on-board equalization - then I will.
Anybody know?
How would YOU set this radio up - ideally?

Is the software upgrade by N3GX sufficient for real ESSB - or would this arrangemant be mid-fi?

Sounds good, You should have no problems with that setup.

Yup, if you look back on the previous threads on this forum, you will find many setups with the DEQ2496 using just such an approach.

Should I use the rear access for the audio input?

Either input is good. You will need the I-Box for sure to run into the front to drop the Line Level to Mic Level Audio. Feeding the rear jack bypasses the Mic Amplifier in the rig so that is a plus, but both ways still use the EQ Preset in the Menu.

Is the software upgrade by N3GX sufficient for real ESSB - or would this arrangement be mid-fi?
Mid-Fi. The most TX Bandwidth you can get using it is about 3.5Kc. The thing that is the worst with these rigs is the TX Monitor. It sounds absolutely horrid and is definitely not a true representation of your Transmit Audio.

You should be able to get it sounding very nice.

Just got a Behringer DEQ 2496 ordered -used- for $145.

I've heard that the iBox isn't very consistent in quality; I've heard one fellow say that the low frequency output on some of these iBoxes can vary greatly.
Is there another solution for this?
It is one of the last pieces of gear I need for setting up this station.

I have a BBE 822A Maximizer w/balanced in/out to use in this lineup.
Anyone use these?
Should I put it inline after the mic preamp - or after the DEQ?

AS you prolly know, I just bought a tube condenser mic a few weeks back and posted that in the mic section.

Today, I purchased a EX3200 for $65 online.

Another step ta gits da Voodoo sound.

Is there any special wiring requirements to make it work.

Thought I read somewhere that both channels are used and a special cable is required to make it work as needed.

I'm tryin . . .
