TS-870: tweaking the menu

What would be the best ESSB setting(s) in the TS 870 menu.
Menu option 29 set to 3000 Hz is obvious but are there more settings to improve ESSB TX and/or RX?

Menu #29 Bandwidth 3000 Hz
Menu #30 Bandshift 0 or 100
Menu #31 TX EQ H or C
Menu #22 Mic AGC start @ 1 (try 0 or 2)
Any improvements via the service menu? Or is it better to stay well away from that menu?

Hi ecc82, I think John has nailed it on the menu setting. Menu 31 depends on the voice and mic. If your gonna run some outboard eq'n or processing. I suggest turning menu 31 off and doing the c131 mod and feed'n the audio in the back. The service menu in the 870 is the reason most 870's went back for repair. Be careful or better yet stay out of it. There's not really anything in the service menu I know of that would help the audio. Have fun with your 870,

OK, so better not use the Service Menu, that's what I thought.
The 870 has the C131 mod and receives audio from the rear already.
Tnx for the help. Best way to improve the audio further is external "gadgets".

Howdy Chris,
Yes, best thing is to stay OUT of the Service Menu!
We've tried many different settings as well as Greg, W5UDX and there really is no benefit to TX Audio in changing anything inside the Service Menu.
There have been several people that we personally know that have totally screwed up there settings and had to have the entire rig sent off for re-alignment. The settings inside the Service Menu are not saveable and once changed sometimes cannot be retrieved unless test equipment is set up and certain parameters followed.
Best to stay out.

So true. And also all the parameter codes vary from unit to unit.
