Why do stations do that to themselves??? I mean, they will not get an accurate answer to that question because it's not defined enough to which a standard is set. Do they mean in the sense of wide "broadcast"-full rich audio, DX/ear-pearsing audio or regular "stock" sound??? The receiving station [more than likely] WILL say "it's good sounding audio" or "it sounds good". The only time they say anything other than that is when the questioning station has audible RFI when transmitting or if they're pushing the transmitter too hard. Whenever a station askes me that very question I ask them in what sense of audio are they inquiring--this makes it much easier and more accurate to give an "honest" response. This usually gets worse when they start changing the sliders on their W2IHY 8 band EQ and ask the question again

--but enough about 'IHY's equalizers, that's another thread

We usually tell them "You have great Communications Quality Audio."
We then make a recording and play it back for them to hear.
That usually removes all doubt.
We've spent countless hours Transmitting into a Dummy Load and Listening to that Transmitted Audio on a Separate Receiver. Also making recordings of this audio, and playing it back to ourselves.
All of this was done before We even attempted to get on the Air and ask "How does this Audio Sound?"
No matter how much Dummy Load time you've spent, We have found that you always need that little extra on the air "Tweak" from yer Padnahs.
Nothing works better than someone making a high quality recording of you. Its like an Audio Picture...worth a thousand words.

Very true. But their recordings can be invalid if it's "colored" or lacking response because of the receiver. Still, nothing like it...especially when it sounds awesome...

--ultimate high are the continous compliments from stations [wide or narrow(er)].

i think the main thing is, if it does sound good for your ears, it sounds good. i will never ask that magic question to anyone, except a couple of people i know very well and i know the can give me a report on that . but they only can, cause they know me and they now what sound i´m heading for.
asking people who are not involved is useless in my opinion. the best thing for me is always to ask my friend martin, who usually gives objective reports to me or sometimes says "thats shitty" or "i don´t like it, but you will" or just records it and loads it up to the website, so i can get an idea abt whats going on.
never ask people you don´t know. there is that guy from italia (izsomething) always on 20m. when you look at him on the spectrum, it looks like a deeeep V, on small receivers maybe like a \ - there is nearly no information in the transmission, just noises..and people usually give him good reports and talk about hifi and broadcast quality..in fact it´s shit. forget it. but maybe i´m too young in this and when i grow older..maybe 150years i will sound as good and have the good broadcast quality
broadcasting regards,
andy
...if in doubt, increase bandwidth

Well, the reason other stations are probably giving him "flowers" is because they're listening with a narrow bandwidth [so they DO NOT hear the lower frequencies being overly pronounce].
They are hundreds of operators that believe they know someone who KNOWS about good sounding audio.....what a bunch of deaf horse dookie eaters. It's rare to come across an operator that truely knows what awesome audio is--especially if it's he/she is not from a regular audio group

. You will more like find stations that have some idea of GOOD sounding audio. I had to put it this way because I realize there is good audio and AWESOME audio [at least in the sense of my scope of SSB audio].
I still get compliments from both mildly narrow and broad stations--with the exception of one on 40 meters who said I sounded DISTORTED. I told him to turn his Noise Blanker off....and low and behold, no more mention of distortion....HMPH
I'm stiill experimenting and altering my EQ parameters on a daily basis....so the sound changes [very softly]. **I save it in anotehr memory bank of the DSP1124....see why I love this unit

Yea, thats one thing We miss about the Digi-Wigi EQ's....the gobs of Memory.
Its a real pain in the Butt to change the EQ settings on Our 8 Channel, Analog Tube Parametric. We have at least 4ea Index Marks with different color "Tape" on each Knob. When we go from 3.5Kc to 6Kc on the TX Bandwidth, it isn't instant breakfast to change the EQ Settings.
But the way the Analog EQ sounds makes up for all the inconveniences...It is soooooo Smoooooooth........Silky Smooooth.......AAAAAhhhhh.....

I know your correct on that quote.... When I ran an analog para EQ I couldn't handle having to revert back to the a previous setting [especially after several alterations and conversing with several different SSB groups

] I've been meaing to get some color sticky's to put on the dials of the amp....make lots of sense for this lazy-ass/weak-sounding/narrow audio station...
You da man!!!!!
