i appreciate the input..very good advice which is what i need right now.almost wanted to throw in the towel on this gig after only a month of playing with this. a question though...ive read that its best to go: mic>mic2200>mdx2600(light noise gate, light compression)>eq>mdx2600(final compression,lim...

Since you will be getting/using the 2200; you may consider taking the mixer out of the chain. Not saying you have to do as I suggest; but having another device in the chain that is unnecessary will amplify that noise floor a bit higher still. Mic>2200>EQ>compressor>radio Or..... Mic>2200>compressor>...

To begin with, none of these preamps are true tube preamps. They have a tube in there; but the tube is merely 'emulating' tube harmonics. A true tube preamp uses ~200dcv to power the tube. With those little wall-wart power supplies that come with the cheap preamps - there is literally 'no way' that ...

Which ART preamp? Not one of those little boxes/non rack type - I hope. Do yourself a favor, and just spend the extra $50 and get the Behringer 2200/rack type for ~$100 from Guitar Center. I think you will be glad that you did. The 2200 has balanced in's and out's. Not the best piece of gear out the...

You should start out with a mic and a mic preamp. Getting familiar with setting these up first should be emphasized. Then, go on and get an EQ and master it. Next, the compressor is important. Trying to take on a lot of devices at once could be frustrating and counter-productive. Enjoy it; its a hob...

Of course, the mic is a very important part of great eSSB audio. No doubt about it. However, I feel there is a point of 'diminishing returns' though - when shelling out the cash for one. Does a $2000 mic sound better than a $200 one? Yes; but the difference is narrowing rapidly when you get to the $...

I see what you are asking for now.
You started out asking about the bass response, the mic and EQ makes that work. So does going in through the ACC2 plug.

As far as the wider filters you are asking about, that can extend the higher audio frequencies a bit more.

Again, not familiar with the 990.

Just about any recently made model radio - within the last 1-5 years old should be capable of ~3kc's wide. Some are better; but usually no less than 2.8kc's wide. It might not be 'Real Voodoo' that you achieve (~4-5kc's wide); but can still sound surprisingly better if you cover the basics. Basic fo...

You could use the noise gate too. Yes; I would run a noise gate. But I would take each step carefully (preamp, EQ, compressor, etc) and fully understand what each one does first before the next step/piece of gear. Measure success this way; I do. Remember, that each time you add another piece of gear...

Voodoo receive is as important as Voodoo transmit . . .

Getting the receive to make high quality audio is important to hear great Voodoo stations. This part not need to be be as costly as the transmit section. But then again - it isn't free - either. Start out simple and see what and why you need it. To do this, there are many methods. It will depend on ...

Re: mic 2200

ok thanks for the input on the 2200 i will try that but what about the phase rev freq and the lo cut leave them off to ??? thanks jon... :o Just say "no" to any EQing or phase reversal in the MIC-2200. Phase reversal has nothing to do with what you want to do at this point. EQing will be better acc...

I did play with a MIC2200 once but I was not impressed. It could be a good cheap preamp from some one point of view but my opinion is that crap is overpriced and the tube inside is just a joke (behind the vacuum tube you can see some yellow LEDs, hi). I choose the UltraVoice Digital VX2496 instead....

Hi John:

Set the output to the "0" on the 2200.
The Mic Gain knob set at +32 db to begin with; maybe up to 50db.
Turn off all of the EQ settings; don't bother with them on the 2200.
Use the DEQ-2496 to master the equalization instead.

As a Ham n00b and as a newer member on this forum, I firmly maintain the right to be wrong . . . Having said that, I have owned the IC-718 and made a modest attempt to get it to be more than 'low-fi' ESSB (3.5khz wide or less). I used a Behringer Ultra Gain pro through the mic input using a Heil cab...

AS you prolly know, I just bought a tube condenser mic a few weeks back and posted that in the mic section. Today, I purchased a EX3200 for $65 online. Another step ta gits da Voodoo sound. Is there any special wiring requirements to make it work. Thought I read somewhere that both channels are used...

Before I do that, I will hook up the DEQ 2496 and set it up.

This way, I can give an A/B comparison with and without EQing.

MXL V69 Tube Condenser Mic

Been reading countless reviews on tube condenser mics. Today, I got my courage up and made a selection. I went to 'Guitar Center' ('shameless plug') and asked them if they would match 'Musician's Friend' (yet another shameless plug) for the price of this mic. They agreed, and sold it to me for $219 ...

They are practically a true reference mic, as their freq response is one of the flattest I've seen.

If all they are starting to use at this point is a pro mic and a decent preamp, isn't that 90% of the process? At least that much got thru. If nothing else, it is easier on the ears and shows the radio hobby is moving forward. It might happen more often now that more people can begin to appreciate w...

If you really want da voodoo; then a real tube preamp (the kind that are fed with +200v's of grid current) would be the first step. Like a Bellari unit. If you want a starter preamp, the Behringer Ultra Gain Pro 2200 uses 'tube emulation' (no real tube grid high volts) and is OK. I use one. But gett...
