The ElectroVoice RE-20 or RE-27n/d, the Shure SM-7 or SM-58 are all top dogs for dynamic mics. The first three are used professionally in commercial broadcasting stations. Local friend uses the RE-27n/d and sounds great. +$300/new and $250/used. I went the route with Chinese condenser mics. I really...

Supposed to be the 'Elecraft K-3 killer'. With the newly re-designed IF and DSP - it should be. Never heard one yet; how do they voodoo? Wonder if the 590 can use the ARCP software and the DSP Modifier program like my TS-2000 can. That would make it nice - so long as it doesn't require extensive mod...

I thought I would addend with some more info on the 13 pin DIN plug. You cannot directly solder the DIN plug that I bought - to the wires. This situation created a huge obstacle in making this whole thingie work. Sooooo..... I bought some thin lugs that would slide onto these very thin pins that are...

Although the mic inputs have there own grounds (you could call it Signal -), those are all unbalanced connections. Try using the pin 8 or the shell as the shield (XLR = Pin 1, TRS = Sleeve) If you get RFI or hum, try lifting it at the rig. Its really just wiring it for the best performance. Take Ca...

Thanks for clearing that up... My intention to write that was based upon what I could gather on the situation, comments from other Hams not involved with ESSB, and a generous portion of disinformation by the same. I appreciate those links. I understand that the FCC and legislators are presently tryi...

Back to the future of ESSB

There has been a lotta hammerin on da Voodoo that we do... So...There has also been a lotta talk on ESSB possibly being put on 10 thru 20 meters. But what about 75m? Will it ever make the cut? Is it possible to carve out a slice of 75m that can be called home ground? Da FCC doesn't make those decisi...

Aloha, Minigrass: I considered doing that with my CB at one time. That is - get a real mic and hook it up to a CB with a Behringer, Nady, or some other brand of mic preamp. But then - I got my Ham ticket a couple of years back, and never thought about doing it since then. The problem with many CB ra...

I appreciate all of your insights on this radio, Bow. I also saw your post on the WWRF too. Seems that the IC-718 can be a Mid-Fi contender, and you have proved it so. In the mean time, I have also acquired a Kenwood TS-2000 and a Flexradio SDR-1000. These is a lot of shuffling around the shack here...

An update... Bought a 13 pin DIN plug from eBay for ~$5 including shipping. Plug is very well made and took only two days after ordering to reach my doorstep. If bought at Ham Radio outlet, the same plug is $22 +tax! Save a little cash and buy one on eBay! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewIt...

Old thread here.... I used to have one in my recording studio a decade back. Very sensitive mic with a very flat response. One could almost hear a fly sneeze two houses away when using headphones. Used it as the primary vocal recording mic. It could really cut through in recordings. No coloration to...

Hmmmm... A mic that has a relatively flat response, high sensitivity, high SPL, and low noise are -generally speaking- "condenser mics". They offers great flexibility to amend the mid-range response - because they don't add much - if at all. Mics that have 'rise' in the mid-range can become problema...

A rose by any other name?

Well, I think ESSB or eSSB adds something to Ham radio that I had always enjoyed. Nice, easily understood voice communication. Regardless of what one may call it. They can and will call it anything they want in the long run of things. Anything but doomed to extinction. It definitely has its place in...

TS-2000 TX Audio Input?

Just want to find out if the rear 13 pin DIN plug in the back of the TS-2000 can be wired as a balanced input - like the Icoms can. I would rather send my outboard mic preamp and digital EQ into a Line Input than a Mic Input. And if so; what is the pinout for this wiring? I'm going to get the DIN co...

Anyone have some thoughts on the "Black Sable" line of tubes? They seem to have a following... :o I have a stack of 12AX7's, some 7025's, and I found one 5751 'Made in Holland" in the bunch from my past days in music/studio. Also found two Tungsram/Hungarian-made tubes. Plus a "Groove Tube" 5751 and...

Just got a Behringer DEQ 2496 ordered -used- for $145. I've heard that the iBox isn't very consistent in quality; I've heard one fellow say that the low frequency output on some of these iBoxes can vary greatly. Is there another solution for this? It is one of the last pieces of gear I need for sett...
